How to Heal After Bone Graft Treatment

Posted .

Bone graft treatment can be quite invasive, which means the recovery process is extremely important. If you properly recover, you’ll get the most out of the treatment and you’ll return to the top-notch oral health you deserve. So, to help you properly recover, Dr. Jeffrey Susman and Dr. Jessica Gorelik are happy to give you the tips and information you need.

Step No. 1: Do your best to stop the bleeding and reduce the swelling. When dealing with the bleeding, place a clean gauze pad over the surgical site and apply some pressure for about an hour. When the time is up, check to see if the bleeding has stopped. If it hasn’t, replace the used pad with a new one and add pressure for another hour. To reduce swelling, place an ice pack outside of the area for 30 minutes at a time. Have the ice pack on the area 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off. Do this for the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery.

Step No. 2: Take the medications your dentist prescribes to you. This can help with pain and potential infection. Make sure to closely follow the instructions of the medication and don’t take them on an empty stomach. This can lead to nausea.

Step No. 3: Watch your diet for the first 24 hours after surgery. It’s best to stick to a soft-foods diet and drink plenty of liquids. When eating, chew away from the surgical area so you don’t affect the incision or stitches. When drinking, avoid using straws. Straws tend to dislodge the clot and encourage bleeding.

Step No. 4: Rest as much as you can for two to three days after surgery. This will help you recover faster.
